Finally reading of the the 5YL Legion of Superheroes.

When I started reading comics, my big in for the monthly grind was the series The Legion. I instantly fell in love with the Legion of Superheroes and did my best to get my hands on as much as I could.

One of the bits that was always spoken of in hushed terms was the Legion series from the late 80s/early 90s known as the 5 years later era. It looked like very few books I had ever seen and there were many it was very polarizing.

Eventually I was able to get my hands on some of it and really enjoyed the first year, but then didn't read a lot after that.

As they have been bringing them out, I have been purchasing the new hardcover Legion of Superheroes omnibuses.

This week, I sat down to crack over those massive 5 Years Later Omnibuses.

The first year or two is amazing. Taking cues from Watchmen that no one else has really taken in the decades since and the best art that Keith Giffens' new style ever produced. It starts the stumble a bit, but v1 is probably 80% killer. (with the main exception of the Not Good Timber Wolf mini.)

Yesterday I cracked open the 2nd volume. The issues that start it off with the adult Legion are still pretty fucking killer. The final? showdown of the White Witch and Mordru (and Amethyst) is fucking amazing.

Then the Legionnaires series starts. For a person who loves the reboot that took most of its look from this series, it is a weird read.

It is also, no good. The Legion isn't acting like the Legion. After 30 years of character growth, it is all gone and a different idea of what dickish kids might be like. But it's not the Legion. Beyond that, except for a few scenes at the beginning with the Adult Legion, once New Earth is set up, they try to paper over the fact that these kids are basically time lost. No one seems to comment on how young they are, or how things are different.  As the main story starts to move back towards using Superhero names again and the new dumb costumes, I can see why it eventually came to the point that the Legion had to be rebooted at the end of this volume.

Hopefully we can get some nice chunky volumes collecting that run as well. I read the first trade roughly 97,000,000 times.

Long Live the Legion

On a windy day in Chicago, we tried out a new Microbrewery!

For my birthday this year, my little sister got me a gift card for the Off-Color Brewery. Today, we tried them out.
Not my favorite beers , but of the 16 beers of tap, 10 were sours and 2 were stouts. So my wife was very happy.

Time to start writing more? Maybe

Hello Blogosphere!

Well, I am in a new city these days.

11 years after I moved back to the Bay Area, I have left it again,

For the last 6 years, I had actually been living less than a mile from my parents house.

But now I am in Chicago and about to start a new phase of my life.

Oh, and I got married back in May. So that was cool. My wife is awesome.

What will I be doing on the blog? Mostly seeing if I can keep up with it. I've been using my Twitter account mostly to log what I've been reading throughout the year, so I might move some of that over to here.
Plus, it might be time to re-start reviewing the comics that I read throughout the week.
Since roughly the 2nd year of the New52 I've been 100% digital, and since DC did their DCU Infinite Ultra thing, I am going to be reading 99% of my DC comics through that rather than paying Amazon. $120 a year is 2.5 $3.99 issues a month. I was doing that in any case (with Wonder Woman and Batgirls and occasional other series) so that easily pays for itself. These days, I will purchase physical copies only if I really really love a series. It keeps down the amount of stuff I own.
Until maybe Weekly Shōnen Sunday starts a service like Shonen Jump has, occasional Manga volumes are the main things I'll be getting on Comixology,

Anywho, time to head to a meeting.
Let's see if I can keep this up.
